This position is a National Community Service AmeriCorps* VISTA position that provides the individual with the opportunity to serve the county, state and nation.

The United Way of Greater Portland Volunteer Center VISTA will work with the Director of Volunteer Development to strengthen current functions of the volunteer center and build its capacity to meet future area volunteer program needs. The goal of the Volunteer Center is to strengthen community by bringing people and resources together to focus on Cumberland County’s most important issues.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Connect volunteer programs and staff with volunteer center resources that support effective, sustainable volunteer engagement.
  2. Conduct community outreach that educates area volunteer programs about local emergency preparedness, VolunteerMaine.org and Volunteer Center activities.
  3. Develop, conduct, and document both on-line and in-person training sessions.
  4. Serve on leadership team to establish a sustainable network for volunteer coordination during disaster.
  5. Using VolunteerMaine.org functions and local community service projects as exercise, help volunteer center develop capacity to respond to a local emergency.
  6. Support state and local marketing efforts relating to volunteerism.

  7. Essential Functions:
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Able to initiate contact with organizations and individuals for the purpose of obtaining or providing information
• Computer skills (including: Internet, database, and Microsoft Office package)
• High degree of flexibility and very strong organizational skills
• Strong customer service background, i.e., high degree of comfort with phone as well as in-person interactions; able to clarify customer needs; respond in timely, consistent manner to requests; manage personal emotions when responding to stressed customers; provide information or training in a manner that is effective and meets customer needs.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, track details essential to project completion, analyze information for its relevance and impact on tasks, and meet deadlines.
• Personal transportation for frequent travel (mostly within the state of Maine).
• Able to make abstract connections between clients, programs and resources.

Desired Skills:
• Experienced public speaker
• Intermediate skills as trainer or educator of adults
• Advanced computer / technology skills
• Experience as a volunteer or program leader
• Ability to do some physical work such as lifting 50 lbs. (related to outside training sessions)

Reports To: Director of Volunteer Development

Length of Appointment: One year;

Time Commitment: Full-time per VISTA regulations.

Qualifications: Detailed project management experience required. Must be comfortable with computers and the Internet, bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferred, independent, self-starter with strong people skills required and ability to multi-task and handle interruptions is a must.

Benefits: All VISTA positions have annual living allowance ($909/mo), health coverage, and (on successful completion of service) a $4,725 educational award for post-secondary education or loan repayment. The following benefits are provided if personal circumstances require: child care, educational loan interest payments, and term life-insurance. The local host will reimburse mileage expenses associated with project travel.

Support Provided: Training provided by United Way and identified VolunteerMaine partner organizations. Evaluation and supervision of the VISTA volunteer will be provided by the staff of the United Way and Maine commission for Community Service VISTA coordinator.

Other: The opportunity to develop infrastructure and build volunteer capacity and serve on a leading edge team of volunteer managers.
