ABC's of Emergencies is a Public Safety Program sending trained Volunteer Speakers to public schools, elders' housing units, and a variety of locations to help prepare people and their families to be safe during an emergency, whatever its cause. Each participant is encouraged to complete a Family Safety Plan with the members of their household. Their reply card, signed by a family member when they complete their family's Plan, are entered in periodic drawings for prize winners.
While presentations occur as scheduled, Volunteers may expect to make 5 - 6 presentations between October 24, 2009 - February, 2010. However, volunteers may request only portions of the year-long campaign based on their availability; i.e. During school year, summer or winter only, etc.
Presenter Teams of 2 volunteers make the presentation to a group. Activity pages, sent home with each participant encourage them to: 1. Complete "In Case of Emergency" wallet-cards for each member to carry with them; 2. Add "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) listings to each family member's cell phone; 3. Notify each ICE Contact they've been added to the family's cell phones; 4. Fill out a Family Emergency Plan (1 sheet, provided in handouts)and notify each Emergency Contact that they've been included in the Family's Plan; 5. One family member signs and returns their "We've completed our Family Plan" Card to be entered in the prize drawings of Emergency Kits, Gift Certificates, and incentive prizes for the whole family to enjoy!

Volunteer Presenters must "pass" a CORI (Criminal Background Check) and participate in a one-hour training on the ABC's curriculum. Volunteers with health or safety experience desirable, but not required. Also Volunteers meed to be comfortable speaking with groups; advise if preference is for groups of children or adults.
