Grace Community Village, Inc.
The mission of Grace Community Village is to offer the means to economic, intellectual, physical and creative wellness to residents in Northwest Rochester. Our policy is to serve all without barriers to class, sex or race.
Description:
Grace Community Village is the non-profit arm of Grace United Methodist Church. We provide services to men, women, children and families in the area surrounding the Lake Avenue/Driving Park Avenue junction. Our After-School Program for elementary children runs from 3:30pm - 6:00pm every day and provides our children homework help, reading assistance with a qualified teacher in our computer lab with phonics-based reading software and a library for the children to read books appropriate to their age and grade reading-level. After dinner, the children play games, enjoy physical activities, watch movies or make crafts. The Youth Empowerment Production Program (YEPP) works with youth age 13 - 17 in a unique program that teaches the students how to create, design and market information through the technique of videography. They learn how to use digital video cameras, lighting, sound and edit the film footage using computer programs. Wares & Wearables is our clothing closet that is open every Friday and Saturday morning. Prices are very low, quality is high and the store is clean and organized. Free coffee is always on hand. The Deacon's Table offers a free breakfast every Saturday from 9 - 10:30am. Everyone is welcome. Also on Saturday is In-Stitches, our sewing ministry. Adults and children age 12 and up are welcome. There is no cost to attend.
History:
Wares & Wearables has been a ministry at Grace since 1998. In 2002 Grace Community Village became incorporated and began the process to become a 501(c)(3) organization. In 2002 we began providing a 1-hour program for neighborhood children that included a free dinner (through Foodlink) and some fun activities. In 2004 this was extended to run from 3:30 - 6pm as it is today. In this 2006-2007 school year we added the services of a dedicated reading teacher whose purpose is to determine the needs of our students and offer reading tutoring as needed. The YEPP program started in 2003 and has worked with teens since that time. In-Stitches has been running sewing classes since 2004. Deacon's table started in Fall 2005 and has served over 12,000 to our neighbors.
