Agency Details:
Group 14621 Community Association Inc.
Our mission is to advocate for and to involve our community members in collective efforts to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods.
Description:
Group 14621 assists residents with organizing block clubs, neighborhood watch and other improvement efforts. We also provide home repair grants and other assistance, including outreach and information on public safety issues, lead hazards and fire safety. Group 14621 also houses a tool lending library for neighborhood residents who are members (small annual fee). Group 14621 works with businesses and business associations on various economic development initiatives, including beautification, marketing and zoning review. Resident initiatives supported by Group 14621 include community gardens, civilian patrol (PAC-TAC) recruitment, CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) coordination, and neighborhood celebrations. We are working with other partners and neighborhood residents to develop a pedestrian and bike trail through the neighborhood which will also have public art and pocket gardens. A neighborhood planning effort has been developed, focusing on the re-use of brownfield locations. Other neighborhood planning and visioning projects also take place on the street and block level. In addition, Group 14621 is an active participant with the Rochester Children's Zone, the Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning, and is involved in many collaborative public safety efforts. Group 14621 is host to the 14621 Technology Center, which provides free computer classes for neighborhood residents.
History:
Group 14621 Community Association was founded in 1974 by neighborhood residents concerned about property conditions, public safety (drug activity), and zoning issues. It is still a resident-controlled agency with a board of directors from the neighborhood and members directing policy for the organization. We serve the area generally known as 14621, between the Genesee River and North Goodman Street, from Clifford Avenue to the Irondequoit/City line. With a strong history of advocacy, we continue to work with residents and other stakeholders to bring additional resources into the community and to work collectively to address problems
