Description:
Membership and program participation is open to individuals and families of all ages, genders, abilities, incomes, religions and races. Through its programs, the YMCA provides for the strengthening of families, the healthy development of children, the development of positive individual behaviors and a healthier, safer community for all.

History:
The YMCA was founded in London, England, in 1844 by George Williams and a dozen or so friends who lived and worked as clerks in a drapery - a forerunner of dry goods and department stores. Their goal was to save fellow live-in clerks from the wicked life on the London streets. The first members were evangelical Protestants who prayed and studied the Bible as an alternative to vice. The Y has always been non-sectarian and today accepts those of all faiths at all levels of the organization, despite its unchanging name, the Young Men's Christian Association. YMCAs are independent, locally incorporated and operated entities. A local YMCA's Board of Directors determines its policies, programs and budgets, holds title to property, employs staff and is responsible for its financing and operations.
