Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County, Inc.

The mission of Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County, Inc. is to promote increased literacy in Wayne County. We do this by utilizing a corps of well-trained volunteer tutors who provide free teaching in Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL).

Description:
Literacy Volunteers provides an opportunity for preliterate adults and speakers of other languages to learn to read and write English. Our target population is anyone who lives and/or works in Wayne County, is over 16 and out of school, and reads at or below the 8th-grade level. We serve approximately 200 students per year. Most of our programming is one-to-one, intensely individualized instruction. All programs are based on student-centered, collaborative learning.

We help identify adults who can improve their basic skills and match them with a dedicated volunteer. Tutors complete 18 hours of pre-service training and a follow-up in-service. Students and tutors meet 2-4 hours each week at a time and location convenient for both of them. These sessions focus on the student’s own personal goals and can range from basic literacy or English language instruction, to assistance in preparing for a GED and computer-assisted learning.

Everyone has a right to access information. Those who cannot yet read cannot fully participate as citizens, parents, or employees. For the individual, increasing literacy opens the door to vital information and increases self-esteem, independence, and productivity.

History:
Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, community-based organization, founded in 1979 and incorporated in 1982. We are an accredited affiliate of Pro-Literacy America and a member organization of Literacy New York. We celebrated our 25th Anniversary in 2004.
