Society For The Protection And Care Of Children
SPCC's mission is to cultivate a strong, healthy and thriving community by providing exceptional services to children and families.
Description:
SPCC offers services through our School-Based Programs and Home-Based Programs. The School-Based Programs provide direct services to children through a school/family approach designed to impact their lives in a positive way. The Agency/Home-Based Programs offer services linking children, their families and the community through collaboration and support. The School-Based Programs include our After-School Program offered at Clara Barton School #2 and James P.B. Duffy School #12. The Agency/Home-Based Programs include the Teenage Parent Support Services Program, Family Outreach Program, Family Violence Program, and Supervised Visitation Program.
History:
SPCC was founded in 1875, and was prompted by the case of a small child named Mary Ellen who lived with abusive guardians in New York City. Since there were no child welfare agencies at that time, a group of concerned neighbors brought Mary Ellen's situation to the attention of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mary Ellen's case was eventually brought to the attention of the court, and in 1874 she was removed from her guardian's custody and brought to live with a family in Rochester. Mary Ellen remained in Rochester where she married, had a family and enjoyed a happy, productive life. She was the first of many children to benefit from SPCC programs and services. Our agency changed its name to the Society for the Protection and Care of Children in 1994.
