Literacy Volunteers of Rochester, Inc. is an organization of trained volunteers, dedicated to providing one-to-one or small group tutoring to functionally illiterate adults, and to others lacking English language skills and to fostering literacy in the greater Rochester, New York area.

History:
Most Americans began learning about adult illiteracy through Project Literacy U.S. (PLUS) campaign in the 1980's; the Rochester community has known of the problem since the 1960's.
In Syracuse, a community volunteer, Ruth Colvin inspired by Dr. Frank Laubach's program, "Each One Teach One," formed a Literacy Project Committee in 1962. Colvin established a format for a workshop to train volunteer tutors.

In 1964, Mrs. Queenie Zuelke, the leader of Rochester's "Each One Teach One" program worked closely with Colvin to set up tutor training workshops. The Rochester program was established to teach migrant workers in the area labor camps. Some tutors found their own students, others taught in the Monroe County Penitentiary, and some worked with children.

Because of the need to use materials other than those produced by Dr. Laubach, Literacy Volunteers of America, Inc was born in 1965 in Syracuse and Rochester's affiliate became Literacy Volunteers of Rochester.
