Rochester Children's Theatre's mission is to offer high-quality cultural experiences that entertain while fostering communication, positive values and an awareness of literature to as broad and diverse an audience as possible.

Description:
As theatre-in-residence at Nazareth College Arts Center, Rochester Children’s Theatre (RCT) is a professional company of adult actors who bring literature to life for children of all ages.

Programs: Annually, tens of thousands of young people and their families benefit from RCT’s various theatrical programs:

  1. Public Performances, at Nazareth College Arts Center, for families on weekends. Each production targets a different age range.

  2. School Matinee Performances, at Nazareth College Arts Center. Urban, suburban and rural, elementary, middle and high schools from the nine county area bring tens of thousands of students, ages 6-15, on field trips to the Arts Center for these school day matinee performances. Teachers are provided with accompanying curriculum-based Study Guides that address NYS Learning Standards.

  3. Plays on Tour provides affordable access to arts education by touring high-quality theatrical productions into elementary, middle and high schools throughout the greater Rochester area. Touring productions can be adapted to most venues and arranged for groups of any size. In depth Study Guides help teachers prepare their students for the performance while integrating the play’s subject matter into the classroom curricula with activities that support New York State Learning Standards.

  4. Theatre Workshops and Musical Theatre Summer Conservatory, held on the Nazareth College campus, include fall, winter and spring after-school sessions and summer programs for children ages 8 to 12. Certified teachers, industry professionals, and camp counselors are all carefully selected and trained to provide the highest quality education in the theatre arts.

  5. RCT hosts fun events during the year, such as Winnie the Pooh's Haunted House at Boo Corner, Princess and Pirate Party, Literacy Alive. All events support RCT's mission and goal to foster literacy and an appreciation for the arts.

To find out about our exciting new season at the beautifully renovated, state-of-the-art Nazareth College Arts Center please visit us at www.rochesterchildrenstheatre.org, or call the RCT office at 585-385-0510.

History:
RCT was co-founded in 1991 by Producing Artistic Director Deborah Haber and fellow actor Stuart Burke, and was originally housed at the Memorial Art Gallery’s Cutler Union. In 1997, RCT moved to the School of the Arts’ mainstage, while presenting annual holiday shows at Nazareth College Arts Center. In 2003, as it became clear that its audience had outgrown SOTA’s theater, RCT moved to the 1,000-plus-seat at the Nazareth College Arts Center where it became a partner with Nazareth College in producing children’s theatre. This residency has further broadened the reach of Rochester Children’s Theatre, whose audience has grown from 4,800 to more than 40,000 annually as it enters its 19th season.
