The Muscular Dystrophy Association

MDA is a voluntary health agency - a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services, and public health education.

Description:
Since its founding in 1950, the Muscular Dystrophy Association has become one of the nation's largest and best-known voluntary health agencies. MDA provides comprehensive medical services to people with neuromuscular diseases at some 230 hospital-affiliated clinics across the country. The Association's worldwide research program, which funds some 400 individual scientific investigations annually are working to find cures and treatment for over 40 neuromuscular diseases, including Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). Locally, MDA sponsors an ALS clinic and MDA clinic at the Neuromuscular Disease Center of the University of Rochester Medical Center. We provide support groups and a Summer Camp for children ages 6 - 21. We provide financial assistance with wheelchairs, leg braces, communication devices. We provide assistance with evaluations for physical, occupational and respiratory therapy. We have the largest loan closet in Monroe County for used durable medical equipment. We provide public health education. All of MDA's services are provided free to the people that we serve. Our programs are funded almost entirely by the voluntary contributions of concerned individual and cooperating organizations.
MDA has a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout the year. We are always looking for people to help at the fundraising programs we run:
THE JERRY LEWIS LABOR DAY TELETHON:(answer phones, assist at registration, the comissary, help with set up and take down.)
LOCK UP PROGRAMS: are held all around the county. Volunteers help pick up the "Jailbirds" and bring them to "Jail" (a local restaurant); volunteers help as judges, picture takers, and at checkout where jailbirds make their "bail".
SOCIAL EVENTS: volunteers help with the silent and live auctions, help decorate and set up, help check people in and out.
MDA SUMMER CAMP: Volunteers must be at least 16 years old. They care one-on-one with a child between the ages of 6 and 21 for one week. The camp is held at the Rotary Sunshine Campus in Rush NY during the last week in June.
OFFICE WORK: We are always looking for volunteers to help us with the many programs we run by helping prepare the mailings and packets that we send out.
