Rochester Main Street
Working together to make Rochester a destination and source of pride!
Description:
Rochester Main Street is a Certified New Hampshire Main Street Community working to preserve and revive the economic, cultural, and social life of downtown Rochester. Our goal is to encourage economic development, within the context of historic preservation, that is appropriate to today's market place. This approach advocates a return to community self-reliance, empowerment, and the rebuilding of our commercial district based on its traditional assets: unique architecture, personal service, local ownership, and a sense of community. We work through a board of directors and four committees: Outreach, Public Relations & Events, Design, and Economic Restructuring. Rochester Main Street produces several festivals (Moonlight Madness, the Lantern Parade, Ladies Night Out, National Night Out in conjunction with the Police Department, Main Street Awards Night) and works with local businesses and building owners to assist them in attracting new customers and in keeping current customers, and renovating and enhancing the look of downtown. For more detailed information, please visit our website at www.rochestermainstreet.org.
History:
In 2004, a group of enthusiastic and influential citizens started the Community Organization for Rochester Enhancement (CORE) to revitalize the downtown and bring people back there as a place to shop and have fun. By their third year, they realized that aligning with the National Main Street program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation through the New Hampshire Main Street program would provide the needed guidance and expertise. They applied to that program and received certification in October 2006.
