Greater Portsmouth Medical Reserve Corps
The Medical Reserve Corps consists of a group of local volunteers (both medical and non-medical) who support their communities during large scale emergencies such as natural disasters, pandemics, and public health crises.
Description:
During an emergency or public health event, an MRC Unit will be activated to assist with mass dispensing of medication, administration of vaccinations, oversight of medical shelters, and oversight/staffing of acute care centers. MRC members may also be called upon to assist at flu clinics, health fairs, health education campaigns, and other community-wide public health initiatives.
All MRC volunteers will receive training with regards to incident command structure, disaster skills, and other training deemed necessary.
The span of volunteers is quite vast and includes physicians, physician assistants, nurses, EMTs, pharmacists, dentists, medical assistants, veterinarians, epidemiologists, language interpreters, chaplains, legal advisors, office workers, HAM radio operators, mental health professionals, health care administrators, etc.
Retired professionals, who have maintained their credentials, and would be available during disaster, are especially needed.
History:
The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) was established after President Bush’s 2002 State of the Union Address, in which he asked all Americans to volunteer in support of their country. There are currently 792 MRC Units nationwide with approximately 170,000 MRC Volunteers.
The Greater Portsmouth Medical Reserve Corps Unit was established during the Fall of 2008. The MRC is housed in the Portsmouth City Health Department and is currently funded by a federal grant. The Region’s MRC supports the following towns: Portsmouth, Greenland, Rye, North Hampton, New Castle, and Newington.
