Allies In Substance Abuse Prevention
Our VISION is: We envision a healthy region where individuals and families are connected and positively engaged in their communities. Our MISSION is: Community members working together to improve access to and develop comprehensive prevention strategies that support the continuum of care to reduce substance abuse.
Description:
Allies in Substance Abuse Prevention supports youth, families, educators, and community members who are committed to the prevention of alcohol and drug use in Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Allies In Substance Abuse Prevention does this by building and strengthening relationships, fostering communication at every level, and connecting with youth, parents, educators, and community members about prevention issues in relevant and meaningful ways.
History:
Based on community needs assessments conducted in 2004 and 2008, substance abuse rose to the top as a community issue under the category of health. As a result of that research, United Way convened a regional body dedicated to addressing the issue of substance abuse in 2006, and supported the coalition as stewards of a $50,000 annual United Investment for three years, working to find community solutions to the issue. Eventually, that coalition became the foundation for the oversight board and membership committee of Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP). The Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) is a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) funded program designed to enhance the prevention infrastructure and service delivery system throughout the state by developing and implementing an evidence-based Strategic Plan. The Framework follows a five-step process of assessment, capacity building, strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation laid out by SAMHSA, interwoven with a core of cultural competency and sustainability. Moving SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework from vision to practice is a strategic process that state and community stakeholders must undertake in partnership. Through the SPF SIG, states provide the requisite leadership, technical support and monitoring to ensure that identified communities are successful in implementing the five steps of the framework.
