Seacoast Outright is a support and advocacy organization that seeks to change the social climate for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth in the NH Seacoast. Through support and social groups, youth empower one another to stand proud and live into their full potential, and our youth-driven cultural competency trainings and speakers' bureau teach leadership skills to glbtq youth, while educating the larger community.
Description:
Seacoast Outright provides support to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth (21 & under) through confidential support groups. These support group meetings are held Fridays from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. We are not a counseling organization, and our volunteer facilitators are adult community members who are concerned about gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.
Our volunteer facilitator training consists of an initial eight hour training followed by continuing education meetings. Initial facilitator trainings are usually held once per year. They are not held at a specific time, instead we hold them when we have enough people interested (at least 6) to hold an effective training.
To create safer spaces for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth outside of the two-hour, weekly support group, we also provide educational and outreach programming to schools, social service agencies and community organizations. We involve youth in every aspect of the leadership of our organization; from the Board of Directors to participating in panels for our educational programming.
History:
A group of concerned community members came together in the spring of 1993 to form Seacoast Outright. We opened our doors for youth support meetings in October 1993.
From our beginning as an all-volunteer organization providing small support groups on Friday nights, we have grown to an organization that has hundreds of new youth attend group each year, we reach thousands of people through our education and outreach programming, and for the first time in 2001, we were able to award four scholarships to youth attending college this fall.
