Cross Roads House mission is to provide safe and supportive emergency and transitional shelter to families and individuals experiencing homelessness. In conjunction with other service providers, Cross Roads House encourages its residents to move with dignity and purpose to stable and decent housing.
Description:
Cross Roads House provides case management services - including information and referral, advocacy, and assistance with accessing the human services system, in addition to providing shelter. We provide an evening meal, seven days a week, prepared and served by volunteers. For the children there is an after school program called the "Resource Room" which runs Monday through Friday 3-5 PM. It is run and supervised by a local Portsmouth High School teacher. With help from his high school students and other Cross Roads House volunteers, they offer a safe, secure, supportive, healthy environment where friendships are born and creativity is encouraged. This program provides tutoring and mentoring for the homeless child.
History:
Cross Roads House was founded in 1982, after a public outcry arose when a homeless man froze to death in plain view on the streets of Boston. From a facility able to house around twenty residents, we presently can accommodate over one hundred individuals and families per night.

Overall Experience
Only several miles from my home, I have found a warm and friendly atmosphere in which I truely feel I am making a difference.

My expereince at Crossroads House has been a truely rewarding experience. I volunteer a few hours of my time each week and work in the kitchen of Crossroads preparing meals and snacks. During my time in the kitchen, I am always visited by friendly staff who enjoy sharing a little bit of their day with me. I am able to talk with those who benifit from what Crossroads has to offer and I enjoy my time... not just volunteer it. At the end of the day, I walk out the door feeling appreciated and, conversly, I am appreciative. posted by agross on March 28, 2003 |

I have found Crossroads House to be one of the most interesting and greatest places to volunteer!

I have been volunteering at Crossroads House since May of 2001. I have had the opportunity to do various things from helping to cook, serve meals in the soup kitchen, work in the pantry, help the staff with intake interviews, fix computers :-), whatever is needed. I have found Crossroads House to be one of the most interesting and greatest places to volunteer! Everyone is so helpful, willing to contribute and work as a team. The volunteers, staff and residents are all fun to work with! posted on November 1, 2002 |
Overall Experience
I truly feel as though my time is making a difference in someone's life.

I've been volunteering at Cross Roads House for about a year now, and it's been wonderful. I serve dinner two or three times a month. I became interested in volunteering as a way to serve my community, but it has become more than that for me. I'm developing relationships with staff and residents that given back more than I'd ever expected. I highly recommend this opportunity to anyone with a heart to serve. posted on June 21, 2002 |
