Wentworth Connections
Wentworth Connections works to make the future of aging brighter by providing practical solutions for seniors and their family caregivers. We are a one-stop senior resource agency for both medical and nonmedical needs of the greater Seacoast. Our programs help seniors to live with dignity and independence in a home environment for as long as possible, while easing the challenges of family caregiving.
Description:
Wentworth Connections is a new non-profit organization, which developed through the merger of Compass Care, the Portsmouth Senior Center, and Portsmouth Hospital's H2U Program.
Our community center for seniors 50 and better runs numerous activities on a daily basis, Monday-Friday. We have health and wellness classes of exercise including: stretch, strength, Yoga, Tai Chi and line dancing. Art therapy and a new oil painting class by a local well known artist. Musical entertainment, special day trips out to restaurants and supper club nights twice a month on the first and fourth Tuesday evening amongst many others. We have a membership fee that covers local benefits, as well as discount within the surrounding communities.
Our Adult Day Health Program provides an enriching, engaging, safe environment for seniors who, for various reasons, should not be home alone during the day. Through friendships, activities, healthy meals, medical support and optional exercise, seniors thrive outside the social isolation of their homes, while caregivers have a chance to take care of themselves!
Our Senior Companion Program matches isolated seniors with the support of a caring friend and our free Community-based Wellness Clinics help seniors monitor their blood pressure, medications and overall health.
Finally, our Caregiver Support Groups give caregivers a chance to relax while sharing advice, strategies, coping skills and understanding.
History:
Beginning in 1905 as the Portsmouth Regional Visiting Nurse Association, Compass Care has been providing services to the Greater Portsmouth community for over 100 years. In 1996, when five of the six programs of the VNA were purchased by HCA/Columbia, our governing board made a forward thinking decision to renovate and add onto our home on Parrott Avenue, creating a community center for elder services. Parrott Avenue Place opened in the Fall of 2000 and currently houses eight nonprofits and one state agency providing important elder services. We are very proud of this updated and cheerful building and believe this "one stop shopping" center provides a critical service to seacoast seniors. As our community transitions into having more seniors than youths, we are proud to provide high-quality and affordable elder care services to seacoast residents and their families.
