Portsmouth Historical Society tells Portsmouth stories. We are dedicated to increasing public understanding and enthusiasm for local history. Our trustees, staff, sponsors, and members believe strongly that the uniqueness of Portsmouth is defined by the city's past.

Description:
Our mission is to provide a central city location where, in cooperation with other historic groups, we can introduce, interpret, and stimulate the study of Portsmouth history. We own and operate the John Paul Jones House museum which serves as a museum of Portsmouth history.
We provide tours of the house from late May to October 6 days a week. Over 3000 visitors come through the house each year. We have a free public lecture series during the season. We partner with other historic organizations in town for the Twilight Tour each August. Our historic garden is open to the public for free during daylight hours. Our garden is also available for private parties or for nonprofit organizations events.

History:
The Portsmouth Historical Society, founded in 1917, operates the John Paul Jones House as a museum of Portsmouth history and offers its members and the public a wide range of programming.
