Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The mission of Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge is to 1) Preserve, restore, and enhance in their natural ecosystem (when practicable) all species of animals and plants that are endangered or threatened with becoming endangered, 2) Perpetuate the migratory bird resource, 3) Preserve a natural diversity and abundance of fauna and flora on refuge lands. 4) Provide an understanding and appreciation of fish and wildlife ecology and people's role in their environment, and 5) Provide refuge visitors with high quality, safe, wholesome, and enjoyable recreational experiences oriented toward wildlife, to the extent these activities are compatible with the purposes for which the refuge was established.

Description:
Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) was established in 1992 and is located along the eastern shore of New Hampshire's Great Bay in the town of Newington. A variety of rich wildlife habitats from uplands to open waters can be found throughout the refuge. With its open coastal waters and abundant prey, the refuge plays a significant role as migration and wintering habitat for the federally protected bald eagle. The bay area also provides prime migration habitat for the peregrine falcon. Many state protected species use the refuge including the common loon, pied-billed grebe, osprey, common tern, northern harrier, and upland sandpiper. The bay area also serves as New Hampshire's major wintering area for black ducks. Great Bay NWR is currently administered by the Parker River NWR in Newburyport, MA.

History:
Congress authorized the creation of the Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge and transfer of 1000+ acres of relatively undeveloped Air Force land, at Pease Airport to the US Fish & Wildlife Service, in December 1991. The refuge was formally opened to the public in May, 1996.
