Blue Ocean is a Portsmouth-based non-profit that promotes awareness of the marine environment through research and education in New England.

Description:
We do much of our work from local whale watch boats, but also provide educational programs, public presentations, community beach cleanups and student internships.

Our research and education efforts focus on marine species in the Gulf of Maine, primarily marine mammals. There is not a lot of awareness about the Gulf of Maine, so we attempt to learn more about this environment and then educate the public about the marine environment, creatures and conservation issues that exist right out their back door.

History:
Blue Ocean was founded in Fall 2000, and achieved 501(c)3 status in March of 2002. We are comprised of two directors and several seasonal interns who work out of a small office in downtown Portsmouth. Throughout the past year, we have increased our educational efforts by visiting more schools and groups and conducting school field trips, expanded our data collection network to encompass more local naturalists, engaged the community in monthly beach cleanups and marine debris monitoring, and hosted several student interns. This year, we hope to continue expanding our research/educational network, and our beach cleanup program, offer internships year-round and increase the amount of schools and groups that we speak to.
