New Heights

The mission of NEW HEIGHTS is to develop the confidence, competence, character and resiliency needed to transition into adulthood. NEW HEIGHTS provides opportunities and programs that foster respect for themselves, others and the environment. We strive to accomplish this by offering a wide variety of programs including educational, recreational, artistic, musical, outdoor adventure and inter-generational. All of our programs are staffed by competent, caring adults who are dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for your child. NEW HEIGHTS is available to all seacoast area youth.

Description:
Multiple programs exist within our adolescent programming. During the school year our teen center is open Monday-Friday from 2:00pm-5:30pm. Each day teens choose to participate in one of 2 to 4 daily activities being offered. Activities may include: adventure trips, cooking club, exploring the natural world, music, art projects, interacting with younger children in the community, role-playing games, sport games and more. Teens also have many opportunities to "hang out" with friends.

The Adventure Program strives to introduce youth to safe, challenging activities while fostering a healthy respect for nature. Adventure Program runs concurrently with the Teen Center year round. Our variety of activities include mountain biking, rock climbing, overnight backpacking hiking, skiing and snowboarding and so much more at different skilled levels.

Our Summer Program offers a variety of activities for adolescents. The Teen Center program runs daily offering large group trips such as trips to the beach/state parks, roller/ice skating, bowling, community service, talent shows, special projects and more. Adventure Program offers many day/overnight trips including mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, deep sea fishing, archery, sailing, surfing, etc. Wonderful Workshops are offered for one week throughout the summer where special guests put on programs such as photography, puppetry, artwork, pottery, gaming, babysitter training, cooking and more.

Other programming offered includes school-based outreach and groups where staff offers support in facilitating and co-facilitating discussion and activity based groups. High School opportunities include adventure programming and Peer Leadership.

History:
New Heights started as a community program for adolescents in the Portsmouth area where children could hang out, play games and be with their friends after school. The first location was in the Connie Bean Recreation Center. Adventure based programming became a large focus to help develop children in a positive direction as well as offering safe, experiential learning with other children. In 1999 our program moved to a beautiful new facility within the Community Campus. Our program has flourished into many new directions with the accessibility and resources of our new area. We continue to increase the variety of programming we offer to the community on a regular bases. As we grow and expand we are looking for creative, enthusiastic role models to work, play and have fun with our adolescents.
