New Hampshire Association for the Blind
Our Mission is: To Advance the independence of persons who are blind and visually impaired. We do this by offering support and help to any NH citizen of any age who is experiencing vision loss to the point where the person's ability to function in daily living has been impaired.
Description:
The NH Association for the Blind is a statewide, private, non-profit agency providing support through information, education, informed choice, and help through a range of specialized vision rehabilitation services as well as through collaborative programming with partner agencies. These services are offered at the McGreal Sight Center, at regional offices and in clients' homes.
History:
The NH Association for the Blind is celebrating it's 97th year, having been established in 1912 in Hancock, NH. The Association was incorporated in 1933 and moved to Concord. At this time, all services were provided by volunteers. During the 1940's and 1950's, William McGreal was named Executive Director and volunteers formed Homecraft and Recreation Programs. During the 1960's, services became professionalized and counseling by trained Social Workers became the core service, coordinating Orientation & Mobility Training and Daily Living Skills. Services were expanded in the 1970's. Low Vision Services were introduced to NH and the Berlin office was opened. The 1980's brought the Association to it's new headquarters, the McGreal Sight Center, following a $1 million capital building and endowment campaign. Plans were formulated to meet the needs of a growing older population. The growth continued throughout the 1990's and the McGreal Sight Center was renovated and dedicated in 1998 as NH's first vision rehabilitation center.
