Agency Details:

Rochester Youth Safe Haven

The Rochester Youth Safe Haven (RYSH) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) after-school program for underprivileged children who live in public housing in the City of Rochester. RYSH is funded by the Rochester Housing Authority which has developed and implemented a youth investment program which has promoted community development to all residents of public housing in Rochester. Our Mission is to provide youth a safe place to go after-school by providing them with positive programs which will empower youth to stay in school, maintain good grades, develop socially, academically and physically as well as serve as a deterrent to juvenile crime, violence and substance abuse.

Description:
On a daily basis, RYSH provides an after-school homework lab which is designed to promote academic achievement among children 6-18 years old. Our program gives children a safe place to pursue their academic goals and a positive environment which they can challenge themselves academically, socially and physically. Ultimately, we would like to provide the children with a safe environment where they are free to explore new opportunities and experiences.

History:
The RYSH is a young program developed in the late '90s. It began as a small gathering of a few neighborhood youth and has since bloomed into the thriving program it is today. In October of 1999 the Rochester Housing Authority (RHA) collaborated with the Rochester Police Department to open a police mini sub-station which is located in the center of Cold Spring Manor. This police substation and the RYSH work together to decrease juvenile crime, violence and substance abuse. Police officers work directly with the youth in mentoring and counseling troubled youth.
