Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse
FPHL is dedicated to the preservation of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire, as well as the preservation of the history of the light station and its keepers. We also strive to educate the public about this history, which dates back to 1771.
Description:
We hold open houses at the lighthouse from spring through fall, and we also hold additional fundraising events including cruises and art shows. Our mission is to preserve the lighthouse and to make it accessible to the public. We'd like to build up a larger pool of volunteers for our open houses. Volunteering involves guiding people to the lighthouse, handing out literature, selling merchandise, and answering questions. We especially need people who have an interest in learning about the history of the lighthouse and would enjoy sharing that knowledge with the public.
History:
In spring 2000, the American Lighthouse Foundation obtained a license from the U.S. Coast Guard to care for Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, NH. FPHL was formed as a chapter of ALF to care for the lighthouse. Since then, we have held many open houses enabling thousands of people to tour the lighthouse. In 2009, our mission became much larger as we were awarded ownership of Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery, Maine.
