The Sad Cafe strives to provide, promote and support positive life choices for our community, particularly youth, through innovative programming. The Sad Cafe provides a unique all ages venue to amateur aspiring musicians, actors and artists in an environment that is safe, substance free and family friendly. We believe in supporting teen involvement in the arts as a healthy means of self expression and in providing substance abuse prevention resources to youth and their families.
Description:
The Sad Cafe provides teen bands and single artists from all over New England the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience of their peers and family. The Sad Cafe provides them with a free CD of their performance that is recorded on professional equipment produced in an acoustical setting. In addition, The Sad Cafe provides a venue for theatrical productions and has a house theater group made up of teen actors from the local school districts. The Sad Cafe also provides an arts and community service after school program to two school districts. We provide transportation from the school to our facility and provide teens with safe, substance free and fun after school activities, such as Making A Band and Musical Theater.
History:
The Sad Cafe was founded as a for profit venue for local teen artist to perform in a substance free, family friendly environment. It was quickly determined that to survive and provide the services the community needed that the Sad Cafe should become non-profit, which it did in 1999. Since then The Sad Cafe has hosted over four hundred teen bands and single artists and two to three teen theatrical productions PER YEAR, monthly middle school dances and get togethers, and sponsored over forty teens in attending Teen Institute Leadership Training, family/parenting workshops and after school and summer programs in the arts for youth.
