Position title: Board Member
Description: Do you love the ocean, the beach, and/or boats? Our ideal board candidate is a professional who is committed to environmental issues. Those with experience in law, finance, marketing or education are most needed.

Board member roles and responsibilities include:
• Provide community connections – particularly in NH and/or, northern MA and southern ME
• Serve as a role model and act strategically on behalf of BOS – demonstrate commitment to environmental issues
• Promote BOS within the community and among their peers
• Help BOS build capacity by asking, advocating and/or being an ambassador for the organization
• Identify potential prospects, cultivate and solicit donors, assist with relationship-building and acknowledging donors
• Networking on behalf of BOS (e.g. attend networking events with director or staff, or events that staff are unable to attend)
• Make a financial contribution to BOS’s annual campaign
• Advocate on behalf of BOS’s mission and provide access to policymakers and media.
• Regular attendance at meetings
• Help BOS develop a strategic plan
• Approve a budget and work plan developed by the director/staff for each year
• Receive regular reports from staff about operations and finance.
• Assure that BOS is in compliance with Federal, state and local laws and regulations.
• Participate in committees where needed
• Stay informed on the activities and programs BOS conducts.

Day, time, place of board meetings:: Meetings are currently held every 1-2 months during weeknights in the Blue Ocean Society office in downtown Portsmouth
