On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the United Way of the Greater Seacoast (UWGS) is teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) to host the 16th annual NALC Food Drive!
This event is the nation's largest single-day food drive, with letter carriers having collected more than 836 million pounds of food from postal customers since its inception. On this date, letter carriers pick up food left at mailboxes along their routes and deliver the donations to community food banks, pantries and shelters.
Participating in this event couldn't be easier, as you can participate from YOUR home! All you need to do is leave a bag of non-perishable food and/or personal hygiene items by your mailbox on Saturday, May 10, 2008. Then, your letter carrier will pick up your items from YOUR MAILBOX and deliver them to a local food bank, pantry or shelter to help them stock up for the summer months!
Some of the items needed are:
- appropriate toiletry items, paper towels, tissues, toilet paper
- tuna fish and other canned meats/protein
- canned soups, vegetables, and fruits
- juice boxes
- crackers
- hot or cold cereals
- fruit snacks
- peanut butter and jelly
- condensed and boxed milk
- pasta and pasta sauce
- cooking oils and other condiments.
