Kansas State Historical Society
Last updated on April 7, 2008

The mission of the Kansas State Historical Society is to identify, collect, preserve, interpret, and disseminate materials and information pertaining to Kansas history in order to assist the public in understanding and appreciating their Kansas heritage and how it relates to their lives.

Description:
The Kansas State Historical Society is arranged into six divisions: Administration, Cultural Resources, Education/Outreach, Historic Sites, Library/Archives, and Museum.
History is a part of us, it is what we call upon as we identify ourselves and determine where we are going in light of where we have been. The Kansas State Historical Society is a public agency with an obligation to serve the public by making available to them our services. Volunteers are an important and integral part of the Historical Society. Without the assistance of volunteers the quality and quantity of program would not be possible.

History:
Chartered in 1875 the Kansas State Historical Society is a private, nonprofit corporation. It is also an official state agency. Bylaws and policies are established by a board of directors elected from the membership organization for our private arm. The State of Kansas receives funds annually appropriated by the legislature. The agency also has private funds which are used to complement state appropriations.
