History:
Better Business Bureaus were organized as Vigilance Committees in 1912. The name Better Business Bureau was developed in 1916 The name caught on rapidly. Within, a decade, all of the Vigilance Committees had changed their names to become Better Business Bureaus. Soon they recognize a need to establish some common practices and to protect the name of the Better Business Bureau. The local Bureaus and the National Bureau created several national organizations The national organization evolved through several name changes - such as the National Better Business Commission, Inc. of the Associated Advertising Clubs of the World (1921), and the National Association of Better Business Bureaus, Inc. (1933). In 1946 the Association of Better Business Bureaus, Inc., headquartered in New York City, emerged as a full-time organization with an executive staff. The Association functioned until 1970 when it and the National Better Business Bureau were merged into the Council of Better Business Bureaus, Inc. The National Advertising Division (NAD) of the Council was created to assume the national advertising duties of the former National Better Business Bureau.
