RSVP of the Flint Hills, Inc.
RSVP of the Flint Hills, Inc. (RSVP) recruits and places individuals age 55 and older in volunteer positions where the impact on the community is measurable, and where the volunteer will know they have made a difference. RSVP volunteers provide services that utilize their own talents and interests, and present their communities with a rich array of options for addressing the full spectrum of community needs.
Description:
Our organization is committed to promoting volunteer service as a way of life, empowering and respecting individuals, developing partnerships that benefit the community, maximizing talent—the combination of ability, skills, knowledge and experience—to create a more meaningful whole.
RSVP volunteers engage in a wide variety of community service activities including mentoring/tutoring children at Lee Elementary School and the Douglass Center after-school tutoring program; sending cards and care packages to the Warrior Transition Battalion at Ft. Riley; assisting patients at Mercy Regional Health Center; providing transportation to medical appointments in the Manhattan, Topeka and the Kansas City areas; helping with the commodity distribution at the Flint Hills Breadbasket; delivering nutritious meals to the homebound; making doll’s for pediatric patients and emergency medical crews; and much more. Our organization continually seeks to identify, expand and promote the vital and indispensable service provided by RSVP volunteers.
History:
RSVP is a Senior Corps program. Senior Corps is administered by the Corporation for National and Community service, the federal agency that supports service and volunteering programs to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement. Established in 1971 and now one of the largest senior volunteer organizations in the nation, RSVP engages over 400,000 people age 55 and older in a diverse range of volunteer activities that meet a wide range of community challenges.
Since its inception, younger older adults and seniors in Kansas have been contributing their skills, knowledge, and experience in a variety of ways to make a real difference to individuals, nonprofits, faith-based and other community organizations throughout the state. The business name RSVP of the Flint Hills, Inc., was changed from Riley County RSVP, Inc. in 2006, reflecting the need for us to expand our valuable services into other counties.
Over the past year 425 RSVP volunteers averaging 76 years of age provided over 90,000 hours of service to more than 35 volunteer service sites saving Riley County communities at least $600,000.
