Description:
The National Park system of the United States comprises 390 areas covering more than 83 million acres in 49 states, the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands. These areas are of such national significance as to justify special recognition and protection in accordance with various acts of congress. the overall mission of the National Park Service is Excellent Service:providing the best possible service to park visitors and partners. Productive Partnerships: collaborating with federal, state, tribal, and local organizations and businesses to work toward common goals. Citizen involvement: providing opportunities for citizens to participate in the decisions and actions of the National Park Service. Heritage Education: educating park visitors and the general public about their history and common heritage. Outstanding employees: empowering a diverse workforce committed to excellence, integrity and quality work.

History:
On May 17th 2004 Brown v. Board of Education was opened as part of the national park system. the building known as the Monroe school was the site of one of 4 segregated elementary schools in Topeka Kansas. The event contributing to the integration of public schools in the United Stated and the birth of the modern day civil rights movement are interpreted at the site.
