Agency Details:
Parents As Teachers
All children will learn, grow and develop to reach their full potential
Description:
We are a voluntary program serving children birth to three years of age living in the Topeka Public Schools District. We provide in home quality visits once a month. Every child receives a yearly developmental screening. We provide families with resources available in their community. We also offer ten free playgroups a year where parents come and play with their children in a structured setting. Group meetings are also held throughout the years with various themes, meeting the needs of our families.
History:
Parents as Teachers was developed in the 1970's when Missouri educators noted that children were beginning kindergarten with varying levels of learning readiness. Research showed that greater family involvement in children's learning is a critical link in the child's development of academic skills, including reading and writing. Early childhood professionals suggested a program to help parents understand their role in encouraging their child's development right from birth. The pilot program was launched in 1981 in Missouri. Convinced of the program's benefits and cost effectiveness, state funding was provided in 1985 to implement the PAT program in all Missouri schools districts. Since 1985, Parents as Teachers has expanded to all 50 states and to other countries.
