The Kansas State Historical Society is the state agency charged with actively safeguarding and sharing the state's history to facilitate government accountability, economic development, and the education of Kansans.

Our vision statement is: Inspiring Kansans to take pride in Kansas.

Description:
The Kansas Historical Society is made up of the following divisions: state history museum; research library; preservation and archeology division; education; administration; and historic sites. All but the historic sites are located in Topeka. We offer programs, publications, teacher resources, genealogy materials, tours, and collections on the web to over six million people per year. We serve as the state records center and administer the state register of historic places as well. Our agency is also charged with providing tours of the State Capitol. The Kansas Historical Society Inc. is our private arm that helps support our programs and services. We have a membership of over 4,000 members.

History:
The Kansas Historical Society was established by newspaper editors in 1875. We were first housed in the State Capitol. The agency was then housed across from the State Capitol in the Memorial Building for many years. In 1984 the Kansas Museum of History opened west of Topeka. In 1995 the Center for Historical Research opened at the same location.
