The mission of CASA of Shawnee County, Inc. is to advocate for the best interest of children and youth involved in the court system because of child abuse or neglect. The purpose of this advocacy is to provide a voice for these children in an effort to have informed and expedient decisions made about their futures.
Description:
CASA of Shawnee County recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to provide advocacy for children who are in the court system because of abuse and neglect. The volunteers are appointed by the court to assist the judge in determining what is in the best interest of the child and to become a voice for the child in court. Volunteer responsibilities include investigating, monitoring, facilitating and advocating on behalf of the child.
CASA is a non profit agency, supported by federal, state and city government grants, individual solicitations, various fundraising projects and the United Way.
History:
CASA was incorporated in 1986 and since that time has trained over 500 volunteers to advocate for children. The program has grown from a staff of one to eleven and now includes four programs. The original Child in Need of Care (CINC) program continues to exist and has been joined by the Citizen Review Board (CRB), Child in Court (SAN/SART Safe Talk) program and a truancy program.
In addition to certified CASA volunteers, community volunteers serve on the Board of Directors, Advisory Board and various fundraising committees.
