Breakthrough House is a non-clinical, nonprofit community supported program whose mission is to empower individuals with severe and persistent mental illness to function more independently in their social, living, and working environments.

Description:
Since its inception Breakthrough House has provided various programs. These programs provide service for individuals with mental illness that live in the Topeka community.
The Compeer Program matches community volunteers with adults with mental illness and children with emotional disturbance in a friendship relationship.

There are five (5) volunteer services provided through Compeer.

The are three(3) services for Adults which include:

  • One-to-One--matches- Volunteers are matched with adult consumer of mental health services once a week to assist and enhance successful rehabilitation with various activities and individual support for re-entry into the community.
  • Compeer Calling--volunteers call once a week for five(5) to ten(10) minute telephone conversations providing individual support for adults on the waiting list for a one-to-one match.
  • Skillbuilders--is a service provided to individuals on the waiting list. Volunteers are asked to bring their expertise ie. gardening, quilting, collecting etc. The volunteer and staff meet as a group once a month to teach adults independent daily living and social skills.

There are two (2) services for Youth that include:

  • One-to-One--volunteers are matched to a youth with Emotional Disturbance(ED). They meet once a week for two(2)hours to enjoy various community activities. Compeer provides positive role models for children who are in need of extra support in their lives.
  • Lunch Buddies--a school based mentoring program for children and youth who have displayed emotional or behavior problems in the classroom. They meet once a week at the youth's school to eat lunch during the school year.

History:
Breakthrough House, Inc. has been in existence for approximately thirty years serving individuals with mental illness in the Topeka community.
Last year approximately 1000 individuals were served.
