Meals on Wheels of Shawnee and Jefferson Counties, Inc. provides nutritionally balanced meals and related services to assist senior and disabled individuals in their ability to live independently.
Description:
Meals on Wheels delivers a midday meal to customers of all ages who are homebound and unable to prepare nutritious meals for themselves. Volunteers deliver a well balanced meal and a smile Monday through Friday. This progam is so much more than a meal it is also a safety check for the seniors. Over half of our clients tell us that they see no one else during the day besides our volunteer. Families of our clients depend on the volunteers to be their daily eyes and ears especially when they live out of town. The agency also operates the Friendship Meals program which offers individuals age 60 and over the opportunity to have a nutritious meal in a group setting. There are 17 different sites, ranging from community centers to churches to apartment complexes, from which to choose.
History:
Incorporated in 1972 Meals on Wheels began by serving 30 clients a hot noon meal and a sack supper in Topeka only. Today, across the two county area, over 700 customers receive Meals on Wheels and over 500 participate in Friendship Meals.
