The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
Description:
Leadership in The Salvation Army is provided by commissioned officers, both men and women, who are recognized ministers of religion. Evangelistic and social enterprises are maintained, under the authority of the General, by full-time officers and employees, as well as soldiers who give service in their free time. The Army also benefits from the support of many adherents and friends, including those who serve on advisory boards. Salvationists accept a disciplined and compassionate life of high moral standards which includes abstinence from alcohol and tobacco.
History:
The Salvation Army was founded in London, England, in 1865 by William Booth. The work of the Army quickly spread and in 1880 The Salvation Army officially came to The United States. In 1886 the Army was established in Topeka. Since that time the officers, soldiers, volunteers, and employees of The Salvation Army have worked together to meet the needs of members of the Topeka community. Today The Salvation Army is at work in more than 100 countries throughout the world.
