Shawnee County Reentry Program
Last updated on September 4, 2008

The Shawnee County Reentry Program (SCRP) works to unite community support and providers to assist individuals in effectively transitioning from prison into society as productive, law abiding citizens. Participants work to collaborate with their communities, social support, and families to gain the necessary skills to transition into society and remain crime free.

Description:
Each month an average of 490 adult offenders are released from Kansas prisons. They are often released back onto the same streets where the crime they committed occurred. Upon release many have little or no money, no place to live, no job or ability to achieve sustained employment and no social support. In addition, many labor under the burden of lifelong patterns of anti-social influences and thinking. The result is that nearly 50% of those released return to prison within 6 months. Through SCRP we now have the opportunity to help make our communities safer by improving offenders' chances of a successful return home.
Eligible participants must meet the following criteria; housed at Lansing (male) or Topeka (female) Correctional Facilities, returning to Shawnee County, have 18 months left to serve of their sentence, and are considered a high risk for re-offending. Case Manager Advocates (CMA) work with participants to determine risks and needs. With the guidance of SCRP staff, participants select and attend classes established by SCRP. These classes are facilitated by volunteers. The classes are designed to provide participants with skills they will need upon release i.e. money management, resume writing, work ethics, relapse prevention, and goal setting to name a few. SCRP also uses mentor to providing guidance and support to participants.

History:
SCRP is administered by the Kansas Department of Corrections. This program implements a comprehensive program to prepare and assist individuals transitioning back into the community. SCRP is a part of a national initiative to establish research-based, effective reentry models and practices in communties all over the country, called the Serious and Violent Offenders Reentry initiative (SVORI), administed by the United States Dept. of Justice in partnership with other federal agencies, including the departments of Labor, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Veterans' Affairs (VA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services (SAMHSA). SCRP includes many community partners; corrections, law enforcement, employers, neighborhoods, political representatives, landlords, mental and medical health providers, victim services, ex-offenders, faith and community based organizations.

Reentry provide the opportunity, training and guidance needed for me to serve at Lansing State Corrections.
Heart Touch Inc. is a non-profit organization formed to conduct family relationahip seminars particularly in the area of parenting. I teach a remedial training seminar for fathers at Lansing State Correctional Facility titled, Quenching the Father Thirst. My first series was conducted in medium security. I am now teaching in maximum. I have found the attitude of the men to be cooperative, genuinely interested and open to interaction in the class. It has been personally rewarding to me to have this opportunity. I am committed to doing what I can to help these fathers return to their family and become a blessing to their children rather than to continue wounding them.
