St. Francis Health Center

We will, in the spirit of the Sisters of Charity, reveal God's healing love by improving the heath of the individuals and communities we serve, especially those who are poor or vulnerable.

Description:
St. Francis Health Center opened on Oct. 17, 1909, with 40 beds. Today, the health center has 1,914 employees, 378 licensed beds and a medical staff representing nearly all specialities. St. Francis offers a full-array of health services including comprehensive cardiac care, cancer treatment, emergency and rehabilitation services and programs focused on prevention and wellness including sports medicine and mammography. St. Francis has a strong commitment to technology and was the first hospital in Kansas to purchase a PET scanner and the only hospital between Kansas City and Denver to offer a da Vinci surgical robot in 2006. St. Francis recently introduced TomoTherapy radiation treatment to the area, one of only 200 hospitals worldwide offering this service. In Frebruary 2009, St. Francis received the HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence given to the top 5 percent of the nation's hospitals. St. Francis recently joined the Midwest Cancer Alliance Clinical Trials Network, which provides additional access to protocols for cancer treatment. Other physicians have conducted clinical trials at St. Francis, including tests for enhanced care for asthma patients. Additionally, St. Francis has an accredited Chest Pain Center, and its Turning Point Surgical Weight Loss Solutions Program is a center of excellence, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

As it looks toward a second century of service, St. Francis is demolishing former Menninger Clinic buildings on 132 acres that it owns in west Topeka. Many of the materials have been salvaged and sent to Greensburg, Kans., a community devastated by a tornado in May 2007, for use for "green" construction. The footprint for a new St. Francis hospital would be on 40 acres. The rest of the land is open for commercial development, such as restaurants, pharmacies, medical supply companies and other enterprises with compatible interests. Environmental considerations will be integrated into the planning process, which will tie nature into the healing process. St. Francis is also working with Stan Herd, internationally renowned crop artist, on a signature landscape design using natural elements for unveiling in time for its 100th anniversary celebration on Oct. 17, 2009
