We are always looking for people to serve on our Board of Directors who have skills and experience in public relations, fund-raising and strategic planning. However, these skills are not a prerequisite for serving on our Board. Ideally, we want a Board composed of people from our community who have a diverse set of skills, knowledge, experience and backgrounds. The most important thing that a person can bring to our Board is a sincere desire to help our council improve adult literacy in our community.
We elect Board members and officers (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer) at our Annual Meeting each year in June. A term for members and officers is 2 years. We expect that each member will also serve on one of our 5 standing committees or, as necessary, on an ad hoc committee. Ours is a "working Board" and, as such, members are expected to help with special projects or assignments when possible.
Our Board meets for approximately 11/2 to 2 hours on approximately the fourth Monday of nine months of the year (not including July or December). We normally meet at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library.
