BREAKTHROUGH HOUSE, INC. POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Member of the Board of Directors Date: May 1, 2009
POSITION PURPOSE: Breakthrough House, Inc. is a nonprofit organization established to support the recovery of individuals with mental illness by empowering them to function more independently in their social, living, and working environments and to secure decent, safe, and affordable housing for them in Shawnee County. The purpose of the Board of Directors is governance—leading, guiding, and making decisions that ensure the organization is doing its best to fulfill its mission and thereby make the community a better place to live. JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Duties and responsibilities of individual members of the Board of Directors include the following: Attend and participate in all board and committee meetings and functions, such as special events. Be informed about the organization's mission, services, policies, and programs. Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings. Serve on committees or task forces and offer to take on special assignments. Participate in fundraising activities and make a personal financial contribution to the organization. Inform others about the organization. Suggest possible nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of the board and the organization Keep up-to-date on developments in the organization's field. Follow conflict of interest and confidentiality policies. Refrain from making direct requests of the staff. Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities, such as reviewing the organization's annual financial statements. Participate actively in the board’s annual evaluation and planning activities. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, and work well with people individually and in a group. Willingness to prepare for and attend board and committee meetings, ask questions, take responsibility, and follow through on a given assignment, contribute personal and financial resources in a generous way according to individual circumstances, open doors in the community, and evaluate oneself. Openness to developing certain skills if not already possessed, such as to cultivate and solicit funds, cultivate and recruit board members and other volunteers, read and understand financial statements, and learn more about the substantive program areas of the organization. Honesty, sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views, a friendly, responsive, and patient approach, community-building skills, personal integrity, a developed sense of values, a sense of humor, and concern for the cause of mental health recovery. TIME REQUIRED: Monthly Board meeting—1 1/2 hours; Committee Meetings (usually one per month)—1 hour; Strategic Planning (Full day—9:00 to 4:00, or two half-days—9:00 to 1:00); Fundraising and Special Events—as needed and available; Orientation—2 hours.
