Furniture Assist
The mission of Furniture Assist mission is to collect, store, and distribute donated items to families in need. This also reduces the items sent to the landfill.
Description:
Furniture Assist accepts donations that are in good condition and could be used in a small apartment. These items include furniture, especially beds, tables, and sofas, appliances, dishes, kitchen utensils, bedding, towels/linens, cribs and other baby items, tables and chairs. We also take household goods, clothing, medical items, office furniture, and yard tools. These items can be dropped off at our storage facility: Self Storage Depot, 400 North 14th Street in Kenilworth New Jersey on Sunday from 11:00 AM-2:30 pm.
These donated items are given to families in need who are referred by a social service agency. Families are given a scheduled appointment on Sundays to attend an Open House and choose the items for their homes. The family is responsible for transporting the items home.
History:
Furniture Assist was created as an outreach of St. Luke and All Saint's Episcopal Church, Union to help provide an outlet for people to donate goods and for families in need to receive those items. Furniture Assist is now the outreach of several community partners. The organization received its incorporation in January 2006 and its non-profit status in October 2006.

Overall Experience
Exhilaration and self satisfaction are just the begining of explaining the emotions I feel seeing the smiles on the faces of the familes that are really in need of these free items.

Furniture Assist, accepts donations of unwanted useable household items, into their Storage facility on 14th St., in Kenilworth, on an appointment basis or open drop off on Sundays from 11am to 2:30, and organizes them into separate storage units with other similar items. Appointments are made by families who have a referral from their Church or other agency, they borrow or rent a truck and we GIVE them whatever items they need for their home. Dishes, Linens, tables, chairs, lamps, dressers, whatever has been donated. The donated items are stored for a very short time, they go right out the door to these familes who have had a fire or lost a job, or had some type of hardship.
Being a volunteer I have had the opportunity to talk to some of these familes & they cannot say THANK YOU enough. Even the familes that are dropping off their parents house full of items after a death, have a positive feeling to know these items are not going to a landfill or being sold. I wish there was a word in my vocabulary that could explain all the feelings that i feel being involved with FURNITURE ASSIST!!
