Anderson House is a residential program for women recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction. Dedicated to providing quality treatment, Anderson House supports women as they develop the necessary goals and life skills to return to the community as responsible, productive individuals.
The vision of Anderson House is to expand its program ans facilities so it can treat more women with addictions with the excellence they so deserve.
Description:
Based on the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Anderson House program integrates a variety of treatment methods to help women shed old behavior patterns and adopt new healthy, responsible ones. Residents are provided with shelter, food and transportation and receive individual, group and family counseling, life skills education and case management in a structured and caring environment. Clients stay at Anderson House for a minimum of six months. The vast majority of residents are homeless and indigent. While here, women work in the community and contribute a portion of their earnings toward the cost of their treatment.
History:
A Needs Assessment conducted by the Hunterdon County Women's Task Force in 1989 determined that there was a severe lack of treatment services that address the long term needs of women recovering from alcoholism and drug addiction.
The Women's Task Force joined with the Hunterdon Council on Alcohol and Drugs, now known as Hunterdon Prevention Resources, and formed a coalition of volunteers to study the feasibility of locating a halfway house in Hunterdon County. The coalition included members of the local business and professional community as well as individuals and social service providers.
In 1991, Anderson House was incorporated, named after Betty Anderson, a prominent leader in the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction. Nancy and Stanley Baron, residents of Whitehouse, donated a home to house the agency. Anderson House accepted its first resident on February 9, 1995 with a capacity of five women.
In 1998, Anderson House expanded its facility to accommodate 14 residents. In that same year, it purchased an improved property nearby to create a "three-quarter" transitional program, which offers graduates of the halfway house program affordable housing and further time to reintegrate into the community. Today, Anderson House operates a second transitional residence in Flemington.
Since opening its doors in 1995, Anderson House has provided over 53,500 days of treatment and helped over 485 women build new lives free of alcohol and other drugs.
Today, statistics indicate that 40,000 New Jersey women would benefit from a halfway house environment, yet there are only 224 beds in the entire state.
