Description:
The IES Brain Research Foundation supports an important, yet frequently overlooked area – basic research of the human brain. While most brain research charities attract attention by focusing on specific disease entities, it is the fundamental basic research, which with its quiet discoveries provides the groundwork for breakthroughs in the understanding and treatment of brain diseases, disorders and injuries. Important discoveries in basic brain research have led, directly and indirectly, to many clinical advancements in the treatment of human brain diseases. It is to champion the cause of basic research and help find answers to the treatment and prevention of diseases of the brain that we have established the Irene and Eric Simon Brain Research Foundation. Inspired by the groundbreaking discoveries originating from Dr. Simon’s 40+ years as an NYU researcher, this foundation seeks to help provide funding for the unsung heroes of medicine; the scientists. While Dr. Simon’s work is well known in scientific circles, it is relatively unknown to the average citizen. Among other things, Dr. Simon’s discovery of opiate receptors in the brain blazed the trail for modern research toward an understanding of the biological basis of drug addiction & pain. For work like this to continue and for outstanding young people to enter the field, it is critical that funding continue to be available. It is a popular misconception that the Government, Colleges and Universities provide all the necessary capital for basic research. These days, with tighter and tighter budgets, that is simply not the case. Scientists must look to individuals and private industry to help fund their important work.
