Literacy Volunteers Of Hunterdon County

Literacy Volunteers of Hunterdon County's mission is to promote and foster literacy in Hunterdon County and contiguous areas among adults with potential to increase skills in basic literacy and/or in English as a Second Language. To accomplish this, we recruit and effectively train, utilize, supervise, and support volunteers in the delivery of individualized services in the form of tutoring. Through individualized literacy instruction, we seek to enable adults with limited literacy proficiencies to achieve personal, job-related, and family goals and to enhance their ability to contribute to their communities.

We provide instruction to address the individual needs and goals of the student. We value students as participants in our organization and respect their right to confidentiality.

Many people ask us if there is a need for literacy tutors in Hunterdon County. The answer is YES!

Approximately 11% of the adults in Hunterdon County cannot complete a job application, comprehend the writing on a prescription bottle, read a local newspaper, write a check, or read to their children.

We currently have a waiting list of students eager to learn English. Please consider becoming a tutor; the rewards are immeasureable.

History:
LVHC was founded more than 20 years ago to serve the needs of adults who, for a variety of reasons, are unable to adequately read, write, or speak English.

LVHC originally was founded to bring Basic Literacy programs to residents of Hunterdon County. However, as the demographics of Hunterdon County have changed radically in the past decade, LVHC has shifted its focus to English as a Second Language (ESL) training. Because of the dramatic increase in Hunterdon County's immigrant population, the demand for LVHC's services has increased significantly since the organizations' beginnings.
