Twice a year, Literacy Volunteers of Hunterdon County offers an 18 hour tutor training program for volunteers interested in spending an average of one hour per week working with an adult interested in increasing his/her literacy skills. Tutor training workshops give you resources, ideas, and background for the job. During your training, we match you with a student. Matches are made depending on the days, locations, and times that you are available to meet with your student. Tutoring can be an evening or a daytime activity; whenever or wherever is most convenient for you and your student. When you get a student, typically you meet once a week at a public place such as a library, usually for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. We ask for a commitment of six months from the tutor (recognizing that circumstances, jobs, etc., can change). There is no set curriculum. Lessons are planned around the student's needs. It is therefore a very individualized program. For more information on an upcoming tutor training workshop, please call 908-284-0042.
To become a Literacy Volunteer, you must attend an 18 hour tutor training workshop. You do not need any prior experience in teaching or tutoring; our training materials will provide you will all of the tools you need to become a successful tutor.
