To supply UI Hospitals and Clinics patients with the highest quality blood components at the appropriate time.

To provide innovative transfusion and progenitor cell transplantation services for patients at UI Hospitals and Clinics.

To collect the highest quality blood components from donors in a professional, donor friendly environment.

To provide timely, state of the art therapeutic hemapheresis services for patients.

To offer meaningful educational experiences for students, staff, faculty, patients and the community.

To actively contribute to the ongoing research and development activities for UI Hospitals and Clinics and The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

Description:
The University of Iowa DeGowin Blood Center is a hospital based blood center whose purpose is to collect blood and blood components for transfusion to patients at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. The University Hospital transfused 30,649 blood components last year which averages to about 85 blood products per day or 600 per week. The DeGowin Blood Center has a fixed site located in the University of Iowa Hospital and collects blood products Monday through Saturday. In DeGowin's fixed site donors may donate whole blood or donate blood components by automation. DeGowin also has a mobile unit that travels to businesses, groups and organizations in Iowa City/Coralville and surrounding communities. DeGowin conducts between 3-5 blood drives per week.

History:
The transfusion service in the University of Iowa Hospital was created in 1938 and was the first blood center west of the Mississippi River. In 1981, it became the Elmer L. DeGowin Memorial Blood Center because of DeGowin's pioneering work in the field of transfusion medicine at the University of Iowa. The DeGowin Blood Center continues to collect blood products for transfusion to patients at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics as well as performs therapeutic procedures on patients, conducts transfusion related research, and processes the blood and blood components for transfusion. In addition has a Cellular Therapies area and Tissue Bank.
