The 10,000 Hours Show (10K) 10K U of I dome

Agency Details:

The 10,000 Hours Show (10K)
Logo

The 10,000 Hours Show (10K) is a year-round effort to engage young people in volunteer service, culminating in a free concert for which the only admission is 10 or more volunteer hours to local nonprofits. You volunteer, you rock.

The “Show” of The 10,000 Hours Show is 10K volunteer staff reaching out to their peers and asking them to get involved in their community through volunteering. In class presentations and one-on-one conversations, at Residence Halls and Greek houses, and out in the community, the Show recruits new volunteers and recognizes existing ones, showcasing tens of thousands of volunteer hours in the community.
The 10,000 Hours Show’s annual concert is a unique recognition of these volunteers, taking the best of “normal” concerts -- great bands, great atmosphere, great times -- and making them better: an all-volunteer audience, a community saying thanks, and performers who care.
Visibly impacting and driven by young people, 10K is a powerful community-building effort, and at the same time it is a vibrant learning experience. It is produced locally through a partnership between local campuses and United Ways to advise and support young 10K organizers.
The mission of The 10,000 Hours Shows nationally is to mobilize young people to meet immediate community needs and recognize those who do, helping develop the next generation of active community leaders.

Description:
10K's mission is to engage young people in their communities through volunteering, then reward their service with a free concert just for volunteers. All it takes is 10 hours or more of community service, at one of hundreds of organizations in Johnson, Linn, Benton, Cedar, Iowa, and Washington counties-- just look for the blue 10K logo next to participating nonprofits!

History:
The 10,000 Hours Show (10K) operates in multiple communities as independent, locally-organized projects such as 10K Eastern Iowa, 10K Central Iowa, 10K Dane County (in Madison) and so forth. In partnership with United Way of America, 10K National exists to maintain standards, facilitate sharing of best practices, and track outcomes across these local 10Ks.

The 10,000 Hours Show was founded by University of Iowa students in the fall of 2002. These students and an ever-growing group of peers launched and developed the program as volunteers. 10K was originally incubated and managed through Iowa City community-building nonprofit The James Gang (www.thejamesgang.ws). The United Way of Johnson County (www.unitedwayjc.org) was the project’s first non-campus endorser and in later years helped develop 10K within the United Way system.

The 10,000 Hours Show (10K) is looking for campus student leaders to combine the impact of volunteering with the fun of a free concert featuring performers like Ben Folds, Guster, Cake, Ok Go, and Girl Talk. 10K is a student-led campaign to recruit and recognize young volunteers who serve local nonprofits, culminating annually in a free concert just for volunteers. The program was founded at The University of Iowa and now students are organizing their own 10Ks at Drake and Iowa State universities, Univ of Wisconsin– Madison and Michigan State University.
