Description:
The Nest is a community-base incentive education program designed to increase the use of maternal and infant health resources and reduce family stresses so more babies get a healthy start in life. The program seeks to reduce the incidence of birth defects, low birth weight, prematurity and infant deaths by providing social support, offering parent education opportunities and promoting early consistent prenatal care. Pregnant women, as well as the baby’s father, living in Johnson County are referred to the Nest by health care workers, human service providers, friends and family. Participants earn points (Nest coupons) to "purchase" baby care supplies and equipment. A weekly class is held on Wednesday at 1500 Sycamore Street in Iowa City. History:
Program start date: In 1993 a small group of Johnson County healthy and human service representatives committed to starting The Nest. It would serve Johnson County families and have a mission of healthy babies/healthy beginnings. The service program began in September 1995 and was located at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
