Rape Victim Advocacy Program
The Rape Victim Advocacy Program (RVAP) provides confidential, accessible advocacy, support and information to victims/survivors of sexual abuse and their partners, friends and family members, and works to create a community free from sexual violence by providing education and prevention strategies.
History:
In 1973, several volunteers who were aware of the plight of rape victims borrowed a phone, camped out in a lawyer’s office and started the Rape Crisis Line. In 1974, with a part-time work-study student as coordinator, the RVAP was established. Since then, RVAP obtained funding from several local and state sources and has continued to provide victim services, community education, individual counseling, support groups, and a resource library. In 1998-99, RVAP began operating the Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline (ISAH), which provides services to underserved populations, including people without ready access to services. In FY06, the RVAP added a 24-hour Prison Hotline to respond to sexual assault experienced by inmates.
