Volunteer Opportunity Details:

A major part of the Iowa UNA’s mission is not only to educate Iowans on global issues, but to motivate them to take action for social change. The volunteer Advocator will help the Iowa UNA set an advocating agenda by selecting an issue each month and spreading the word.

Responsibilities will include:
▫ Talking with Iowa UNA members, volunteers and staff to select issues
▫ Researching issues and writing clear, concise histories about each issue
▫ Keeping an up-to-date list of local, state and national representatives
▫ Writing letters to local, state, national representatives
▫ Writing letters to the editor
▫ Sending brief history, declaration of importance, sample of advocacy letters and representative contact information to the Iowa UNA listserv
▫ Posting causes on Facebook
▫ Conducting interviews with people affected by the issues/people who know about the issues
▫ Creating petitions, researching places to petition, collecting signatures
▫ Writing advocacy templates and encouraging other volunteers to write letters, and contact their representatives.
▫ Researching, writing, printing and sending out two issues of the Advocacy News per semester
▫ All material communicating with people outside of the Iowa UNA office must be reviewed by Iowa UNA staff beforehand
Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. The Advocator should care about the issues and feel comfortable having responsible conversations discussing the issues. No previous experience is required.
